Getting away with it
On Friday night I made a basic poker blunder - I played a cash game significantly above my bankroll. I had intended to have a week off from the game to recharge the batteries but upon getting in from the pub at 11pm I decided to give the $5/$10 cash games a go on FT. I sat down at 4 tables with $1k on each table and went to work. Fortunately, I ran good again: For example:
Table 1 (stack now approx 2k)
I raise with J10 and get called
Flop 9, Q, K
I lead the betting and I end up getting it all in with a guy holding a set of 9s. The board doesn’t pair and I win a 4k pot.
Table 3 (stack now 2.5k)
I call a raise with J10
Flop 9, K, Q. This time I check, but we still end up getting it all in and the guy has…another set of 9s. The board doesn’t pair and I win a 5k pot.
Table 4 (stack 1.2k)
I raise with T7o. Called in 3 spots
Flop 6,8, J. I bet, called in one spot
Turn 4, giving me a double gutter as a 5 or 9 give me the straight now I check call for implied odds with a pretty disguised straight
River is a 9. Presto. Betting explodes and I worry he has Q10 here, but call his all in and he has 2 pair (J9).
After about 90 mins, my stacks are as follows: 4.8k, 4.2k, 2.4k, 1.4k giving me a profit overall of $8.8k for the evening. At this point I am about to go to bed, but I notice a big hitter sitting on his own on a 25/50 heads-up table with 5k in front of him. I decide to sit down. Again silly, but I am playing on a freeroll I guess. I fully intend just to play him for 30 mins, perhaps paying 2k for the experience,
BUT VERY FIRST HAND:
I am dealt AA on button. I limp. He raises to 300. I re-raise to 900. He re-raises to 1950 and I push for $5k. He calls, it holds and I win a $10k pot. If ever there was a time for Aces to hold up it was there I guess - this is my biggest cash pot ever…by far. He reloads immediately so I think it’s only right to let him have the chance to get some back. He had AK in that hand by the way - I don’t like his second raise, or calling the all-in there. Would some monkey really play AQ the way I played the Aces? Otherwise, best situation is that he has a race surely?
3 hours later, I finally convince him it’s time for me to go to bed. We have had a ding-dong aggressive game, which has been fun. I’m pretty pleased to have had the edge on this guy heads-up for a decent period as I assume he is a solid high-stakes player judging by his bankroll. My finishing stack is $14k, leaving me almost $18k up for the session. I’m considering playing the $10k WSOP HU event in Vegas now. I’ll need more practice at this level before deciding.
